Black bear habitat was strongly stressed in this
program because if the bears have no place to
live, and nothing to eat, they will either leave
or die. We can have new development and new
roads, and still maintain a balance with nature.
All we need is education and thoughtful
planning.
A habitat that sustains families of bears is a
healthy one. If bear families live there so do
many other animals. This program shows bear
families in the wild.
This
is part two of the conservation series entitled
"Season of the Bear." This one-hour documentary
program shows black bear cubs playing sleeping,
running, and nursing. Much research, many field
trips, and a passion for bears went into the
making of this documentary series.
This
program stresses the importance of mature trees
in black bear habitat, and how bears use those
trees. It contains extremely rare footage of
tiny newborn bears in the winter den with their
mother. Cubs shown are four days old up to 11
months old, and we also show adults and glimpses
of sub-adults.
This
program shows how wild black bear families
interact with each other, and we see them
playing, climbing, eating, and nursing. We see
how it really is a family unit, that works
together, and that lives together for a year and
a half. Black bear cubs are really the cutest
animals!
Information provided by several agencies,
organizations, and bear experts proved valuable
in explanation of the importance of habitat and
the re-introduction of extirpated bears, in
delayed implantation, how bear mothers care for
their babies, in conservation efforts, in rescue
and rehabilitation of orphaned or injured bear
cubs.

Nursing cubs of all ages in their first year
The
four seasons of the first year of life of a
black bear cub are illustrated here in vivid and
fantastic photography. You can almost feel the
wind on your face as you watch bears in oaks and
hickory nut trees.
The
scenes in the winter den with the mother bear
holding her newborn babies are rare and
powerful.
Our
mission with this bear series is to promote a
better understanding of black bears and black
bear habitat.
The
first two bear programs were photographed and
researched over a period of 8 years in the
field. Although these black bears were found in
the Appalachian Mountains, all black bear
behaviors and facts are indicative of American
Black Bears across the continent of North
America, with the exception of specialized foods
that may be particular to certain locales.
All
bear behavior is completely natural and as
observed. No bears or other animals were hurt,
baited, fed, or harassed in any way in the
making of this documentary. No trained bears
were used. With the exception of a few tiny cubs
with their mother, all bears in this documentary
are wild bears and were filmed in their wild
environments. No guides were ever used.
This
nature program is for all ages, and non-violent.
Available in DVD and VHS. DVDs contain menus and
chapters for easy navigation.
One wonderful,
and different kind of scene in this program is a
part that puts us right back there in the woods
with the bears. It is a quiet scene, where we
show many faces of several sleeping bears up in
oak trees. Someone asked how many different
bears appear on these two programs. Many, many
different bears over several years. Funny about
bear faces - if you look closely, you will begin
to see the subtle differences in those faces.
There is
another scene in this program, where left to
their own devices, unsupervised, three cubs play
together and by themselves in the woods. One cub
lays back on the ground and begins to pile
leaves on top of his tummy. Take a good look at
that cub's face. He actually has freckles around
his eyes!
